1.Fall Leaf Turkey for kids

This simple craft is made with natural materials (leaves and a pinecone.
Materials Needed:

    * Fall leaves
    * pinecone
    * eyes (wiggly or paper)
    * paper
    * glue
    * scissors
   
Instructions:

    * Go outside and collect autumn leaves and a pinecone (this is LOADS of fun, especially if it requires a trip to a park!)
       
    * OPTIONAL:  You can press the leaves for a few days before making the craft.  This will help keep them from getting crunchy.  We didn’t do this for ours (we’ve had it about 2 weeks now and it still looks fine)
       
    * Glue the leaves onto a piece of paper in a fan shape.  Younger kids won’t get a nice fan, but they’ll still have lots of fun gluing!

2.Colors Turkey Paper Crafts

This is a simple cut and paste paper craft good "just for fun", colors practice, a Thanksgiving theme, a farm theme, a birds theme, or an animals theme. 

Materials:

    * something to colour with if using the B&W version,
    * scissors,
    * glue, and
    * paper.

Instructions:

    * Print out the template of choice.
        

    * Colour (where appropriate) and cut out the template pieces.
      
    * Glue the colors tail pieces onto the turkey’s tail.
      
    * Optional:  Instead of gluing the colors onto the turkey’s tail, put Stamp Glue on the back of the colors template pieces and let the children lick and stick the pieces on.

5.Turkey Fan Toilet Paper Roll Craft

This is a cute three dimensional turkey craft suitable for a Thanksgiving theme, farm theme, birds theme, animals theme or letter T theme.

This particular project uses a fan as the tail… that makes it a bit more complicated than my typical Toilet Paper Roll Crafts but it looks really cute!

Materials:

    * Fan:
          o white paper
          o brown, red and orange paint, markers or crayons
          o stapler or glue
             
    * Body:
          o toilet paper roll,
          o something to colour with,
          o scissors,
          o glue, and
          o a printer,
          o paper

6.Fingerprint Turkey Craft

A finger and a bit of paint are all you need to make this super-cute turkey.

Its fun for children to make for namecards on the Thanksgiving supper table (we don’t normally use name-cards… we aren’t that formal, but sometimes the kids like to help out with the decorating and hostessing… they always seem to arrange a spot right beside Grandma *grin*)
 
Materials:

    * brown finger paint
    * red, yellow and/or orange finger paint
    * scrap of cardboard or old margarine container lid (something to act as a pallet)
      
    * black marker
      
    * paper or card stock
      
Directions:

    * Squeeze a bit of brown finger paint onto a margarine container lid
      
    * Squeeze a bit of red and/or orange finger paint onto the lid, spaced away from the brown paint (or use a second lid)
      
    * stamp the pad of your index finger into the orange or red paint
      
    * Use your finger to make an arch of fingerprints as the turkey’s tail
       
    * Optional:  Make a second arch around the first one using your index finger or your pinkie again… you can use the same color or another autumn color for the second arch  (it’s actually better to make the outside arch first if you’re planning to do two)
      
    * Use your thumb finger to stamp a brown thumbprint in the center of the arch as the turkey’s body
      
    * Use a marker to add feet, a beak and eyes.

7.Give Thanks Turkey Paper Craft

This is a fun craft to do with the entire extended family.  The child can hand a slip of paper (tail piece) to each family member and ask them to write what they are thankful for.  After everyone has made their contribution, the child can assemble the turkey.

Materials:

    * a printer,
    * paper,
    * scissors,
    * glue, and
    * something to colour with.

Instructions:

    * Print out the template of choice.
      
    * Colour (where appropriate).
      
    * Cut out the pieces.  This step may require adult assistance.  I usually let my youngest out the large pieces (like the tail pieces) and I cut out the more complicated pieces (like the wings)
      
    * Print what you’re thankful for on one of the pieces of the tail.
       
          o You can have everyone in the family fill out a strip and print their name on the back of the strip
            
          o Children can imagine what family members who aren’t able to contribute might be thankful for and add those (ex:  baby brothers, pets, special stuffed toys)
            
    * Glue the pieces together:
       
          o glue the head onto the body
            
          o glue the wobbler under the beak
            
          o glue the "Give Thanks" sign onto the front of the body
            
          o glue the wings onto the body
            
          o glue the tail pieces behind the body

8.Handprint and Footprint Turkey Craft

It several peoples‘ handprints and foot! 

Materials:

    * a printer,
    * paper (I prefer construction paper or another heavier paper),
    * scissors,
    * glue, and
    * something to colour with.

Templates:

    * Print out the template of choice.
      
    * Colour pieces, as necessary.
      
    * Cut out the pieces.  This step may require adult assistance.
      
    * Trace around child’s foot (or for a bigger turkey, around an adult’s foot).  Brown construction paper or a brown paper bag work well.  The foot will serve as the turkey’s body.
      
    * Trace around child’s hands multiple times on different colours of construction paper (gift wrap works too). 
          o The trick to the turkey is that more hand prints make it better!
          o Optional:  You can decorate the handprints with squiggly marker lines, glitter glue pens, sequins or real feathers.
          o An Alternative:  You can combine the hands of the whole family or classroom to make one big turkey!
            
    * Glue the handprints onto the body in layers to make the tail feathers (see picture above).
      
    * Glue the face and feet from the printable template to the body to finish.、

9.Handprint Turkey Craft

Yet another craft that uses handprints (I love ‘em!!).  You can really make any animal with wings this way, but it’s always nice to have a printable template on hand for the rest of the critter. 
 
Materials:

    * paper (for handprints) - brown or orange construction paper works well
    * pencil or marker
             
    * scissors
    * glue
    * printer and paper
    * something to color with

Instructions:

    * Print out the template of choice.
         
    * Color the template pieces (if using the B&W version)
       
    * Cut out the template pieces (young children may need help with this step)
       
    * Trace the child’s hands on another piece of paper and cut out (two handprints) — brown construction paper works well (or you can color a piece of white paper)
       
    * Glue the turkey together:
          o Glue the head (circle) to the body (teardrop shape)
          o Glue the face onto the head
          o Glue the tuft of feathers to the top of the head.
          o Glue the handprint wings on the back of the body
          o Glue the tail to the back of the body
          o Glue the feet onto the bottom of the body
          o Glue the flower on a wing or beside the neck

10.Turkey Paper Plate Craft

   
Materials:

    * paper plate
    * markers or pencil crayons (browns, reds, oranges)
    * brown and red paint (we used tempra paint)
    * template pieces I’ve provided (printer, paper and something to color with) or make your own by tracing the shapes onto construction paper
    * scissors
    * glue
    * stapler (optional, but it holds the body onto the plate quickly)
      

Directions

    * On a paper plate, draw lines with brown, red and orange shades of markers or pencil crayons, the lines should all cross in the center of the plate.
       
    * Have the children dip their index finger into brown paint and make fingerprints here and there on the plate.
      
    * Optional:  let dry at this point — we never do, but you could.
      
    * Now have the children dip their pinkie finger into red paint and make a pinkie fingerprint in the center of each index fingerprint they made in the previous step
      
    * Set the plates aside to dry.
      
      WHILE THAT’S DRYING, make the body:
      
    * Print out the template of choice and color if using the B&W option.
      
          o I made the body brown, eyes black, gobbler red and beak orange on the color version.  This fairly closely matches real turkey colors, but you can let the kids get creative when they color in the B&W version
            
            OR
            
          o Make your own template pieces by tracing the pieces from the B&W template onto a piece of cardboard or the lid of a plastic ice cream container.  Cut these out before craft time.  Now let the children trace the pieces onto construction paper
            
    * Cut out the template pieces.
      
    * Assemble the body:
          o the body is the largest piece — it looks a bit like a peanut… the head is the narrow part
          o glue the eyes, gobbler and beak onto the head (you could substitute wiggly eyes for the template ones or just use a black marker to draw on eyes)
          o glue the feet onto the bottom of the boddy
            
    * Glue or staple the body to the plate and you’re done your turkey!

Although you might be quite surprised to hear that originally the turkey did not enjoy the pride of place that it does nowadays. Put together the things that are harvested during thanksgiving such as Indian corn, wheat, foliage, pumpkins, gourds and string them together along with some fresh aromatic leaves or flowers.

You might also want to turn a real vegetable and carve it into the most amazing looking centerpiece. This could be done with a gourd or an elongated pumpkin, if you can find one. Then you might want to stick a few feathers to make it look really authentic. Also, you can have cutouts of the pilgrims all around.

For younger children you could have different kinds of collages which are made from different templates such as those of pilgrims, leaves, vegetables and anything else that is linked with thanksgiving. Once that is done you can ask them to color it and arrange it in an attractive pattern on a construction sheet or cardboard and keep it as a wall hanging.

One can also have different kinds of leaves cutouts made into wreathes or streamers and hung at the doorway or around the dining table. You might also want to create different types of table place holders with the person’s name on it and inside could be written a short thank you note for them.You might also want to make a mosaic or a tableau of thanksgiving related things. If we were to look at the dates on which Thanksgiving has been celebrated in the last two years, then it was on November 22, in the year 2007 and November 27, in the year 2008.
When is it going to be celebrated in the next two years, well, on November 25, in the year 2010, and November 24, in the year 2011? All of these are of course on Thursdays.
